GoDaddy Overview

What Is GoDaddy?

GoDaddy was founded in 1997 in Baltimore, Maryland, by well-renowned business and tech entrepreneur Bob Parsons. Since then, it has become a publicly-traded company with over 20 million customers and 700 employees worldwide.

Suppose you haven’t already heard of GoDaddy from their impressive time on the internet. In that case, you may know them from their clever advertising TV campaigns where their budgets for this type of marketing seem endless.

It appeared across Super Bowl commercials in 2005 and, more recently, the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019. it will be almost impossible not to have heard some reference to the words GoDaddy.

With their new CEO, Aman Bhutani GoDaddy, is looking ahead to more successful years. Before joining GoDaddy in 2019, Aman spent nearly a decade at Expedia Inc. He served as Brand Expedia Group president from 2015 to 2019 and chief technology officer and SVP of worldwide engineering from 2010 to 2015.

With an impressive $3 billion in annual revenue recorded in 2019, things must be great for GoDaddy, right?

goddady tld market share

Not only is their customer number impressive, but what exactly do 20 million customers look like? Well, according to BuiltWith, 1 in every 20 websites seems to be hosted on GoDaddy, and a massive 80 million domains are currently hosted.

This GoDaddy review will go into exactly how well that mission and vision have fared. We purchased GoDaddy’s shared hosting plan and tested their uptime, speed, customer service, and other features in detail to find out how they measure up!

Let’s take a closer look.

Speed & Reliability

How Fast Is GoDaddy?

For the average business today, the way to stay ahead of the competition is through speed and reliability. You want your customers to quickly access what they desire from your website without the hassle of slow speed times or confusing landing pages.

The competition to be the best hosting provider in this category is enormous. When evaluating GoDaddy’s approach to speed, some cracks start to appear.

Considering GoDaddy’s very impressive customer base numbers and annual revenue figures, you’d expect them to have even more impressive stats and data around their accessibility. Devastatingly, this is where a lot of GoDaddy receives its criticism.

GoDaddy Speed Test

Through our research, we’ve found that while GoDaddy’s speed is not as good as Hostinger or A2 Hosting, their hosting server is reasonable enough and shouldn’t disappoint you.

We found that our test site averaged a speed of 322 ms over the last six months.

Load Impact & Stress Test Results

We wanted to see if GoDaddy’s server held up under a bit of stress. So we ran a test using K6 (formerly known as Load Impact) to simulate 50 active visitors over 5 minutes.

The purpose of this is to determine the performance and reliability of the server when multiple users are accessing and using the site at the same time.

godaddy load impact

GoDaddy K6 Stress Test Results

The above chart shows that as the visitor’s increase (the grey line), the response time (the blue line) stays pretty stable. Despite an initial spike around 25 virtual users, the response time never went above 860 milliseconds.

However, the server did return a lot of errors. If you have a small website, then GoDaddy shared hosting will perform well.  BUT, if you have a high-traffic website, your visitors could have a slower experience while on your site.

GoDaddy also offers the latest PHP version, which will give you an extra speed boost. However, they let themselves down because they don’t provide a server-side caching system. Their shared hosting doesn’t come with dedicated speed optimisation plugins for WordPress and similar CMSs.

This can be aided by using a WordPress caching plugin. Caching, on the other hand, can make little difference if the webserver is slow.

GoDaddy Hosting Uptime

As an overview, an uptime rate of 99.96% means about 3.5 hours of total downtime per year, which is not too bad. However, as mentioned, this kind of downtime (or any downtime at all) is not ideal.

Some website hosting services can offer average uptime as high as 99.995%. This, of course, translates to only about half an hour of downtime per year. This would be considered the absolute best across the industry.

Across reliability or ‘uptime,’ GoDaddy delivered ok on our test site. The last six-month average was 99.98%.

We should point out that while there are many negative reviews out there on GoDaddy, our experience with speed, performance and uptime has been excellent.

So does that mean our review is biased? Not at all. When you sign up for a shared plan with any host, they will put your site on a server with other website owners.

In some cases, these servers can be overloaded and cause your website to run slower or have an increased downtime due to the number of resources needed. In our case, our test site appears to be on a secure and stable server.

Pricing & Plans

How Much Does GoDaddy Cost?

GoDaddy currently has three ‘plans’ or pricing structures available. The best part about this is that each plan is incredibly different to ensure the needs of their customers are met.

It ensures no matter where you are on your business journey. There is an option for a beginner right through to an advanced professional.

Before we get stuck into what each plan offers, it is important to note that there are many features, and no matter which plan you choose, you will have access to the following:

  • 24/7 support
  • 1-click install of 125+ applications, including WordPress, Joomla and Drupal
  • 1-click purchase of additional resources
  • 1 GB database storage (MySQL Linux)
  • 24/7 security monitoring and DDoS protection
  • 1-click set up for GoDaddy registered domains
  • Easy-to-use, feature-rich cPanel

Second to note is that GoDaddy offers many up-sells for basic features that you’d assume were just included for free (SSL certificates and backups, as an example.).

Adding any one of these could instantly double the cost of your plan—a good note to keep in mind when looking at the following three plans.

GoDaddy Economy Shared Plan

Their first plan option (or entry-level option) is called ‘Economy.’ This plan is currently priced at a very low £2.27 per month. Included in this plan is:

  • Unmetered bandwidth
  • 100 GB storage
  • Free Microsoft Office 365 Email – 1st year
  • Free domain with annual plan

GoDaddy Deluxe Shared Plan

Their next plan is called ‘Deluxe’ and is valued at £4.99 per month. Very affordable with many great features which make a reasonable step up from ‘Economy.’ Included in this plan is:

  • Unlimited websites
  • Unmetered bandwidth
  • Unmetered storage
  • Free Microsoft Office 365 Email – 1st year
  • Free domain with annual plan

GoDaddy Ultimate Shared Plan

Their next plan up is called ‘Ultimate’ and is valued at £7.99 per month. This plan is designed with more power. Included in this plan is:

  • Unlimited websites
  • Unmetered bandwidth
  • Unmetered storage
  • 2 x processing power and memory
  • Free Microsoft Office 365 Email – 1st year
  • Free domain with annual plan
  • Free SSL certificate – 1st year
  • Free SSL Certificate

GoDaddy Maximum Shared Plan

Their final plan is called ‘Maximum’ and is valued at £9.99 per month. This plan is designed with even more power to enable complex websites with heavy traffic. Included in this plan is:

  • Unlimited websites
  • Unmetered bandwidth
  • Unmetered storage
  • 2 x processing power and memory
  • Free Microsoft Office 365 Email – 1st year
  • Free domain with annual plan
  • FreeSSL certificate – 1st year
  • Free, unlimited SSL for all your websites

Godaddy offers up a whole range of hosting options alongside their popular shared plans that include: WordPress, VPS and Dedicated hosting.

GoDaddy’s Alternative Hosting Packages

In this case, you could skip the basic package and head straight to the ‘dedicated’ package. This range in price makes Godaddy affordable for everyone. However, how does it rank in comparison to its competitors?

Help & Support

How Good Is GoDaddys Support?

Customer support levels can be the difference between a good web provider and a very poor one. Something every business simply can’t go without, and GoDaddy has some large claims in this space.

Award Winning Support

As mentioned, you have access to what GoDaddy has called their ‘Award Winning’ 24/7 support across each plan, no matter what level you start at. So what exactly does award-winning 24/7 support look like?

godaddy contact us

GoDaddy also offers instant messages through their website and WhatsApp.

Across just about every country, they’ve got a support number listed. Not only do they list the 24/7 phone line support, but there is also the ‘GoDaddy Community.’ This is essentially an open forum for users to collaborate, ask questions and read through troubleshooting blogs.

You can access help and support in your dashboard

While some other independent review sites claim that not all the resources are kept up to date across their site, this would serve as an excellent place to go for basic questions and research.

Is expert support important to you?

GoDaddy is there with the help and advice you need to bring your idea to life. When you’re ready to get online, they’re prepped, trained, and ready to guide you from start to success!

Features & Products

What Features & Services Do GoDaddy Offer?

As mentioned throughout the pricing and plans, there are several unique features from GoDaddy’s web hosting.

godaddy shared hosting features

GoDaddy web hosting is perfect for people who want to start with building their business online. I think it does a great job of providing excellent security, affordability, and outstanding 24/7 support across the platform.

It is essential that you can access this support for UK-based businesses no matter where you take your business. They have telephone support lines in most countries where they operate, unlike other web hosting providers we’ve researched before.

Fully Managed WordPress

The only drawback is if you are planning to use a CMS like WordPress, GoDaddy has a lot of restrictions for you.

You may have to spend a lot of time fixing things in cPanel. So if you want to host a WordPress website, either go with their Managed WordPress hosting plans or perhaps for other web hosts in this space.

Are you looking for a feature-packed hosting plan?

GoDaddy’s 1-click app install makes it easy to build your site with the app you love. Need a CMS? Joomla, WordPress and Drupal are yours for a click. You have 125+ apps available with cPanel/Linux hosting.

Security & Protection

Whats GoDaddy’s Security Like?

One of the most impressive parts of GoDaddy is just how much effort has been put into security across their platform.

To put it simply, when security across a web service breaks down, the whole business can break down. The long-term effects of a security breach can damage brand perception, trust and transparency with customers.

Enhanced Security Across All Plans

Because of this acknowledgment, GoDaddy has recognised the challenges faced by UK businesses and created a security system and promise which addresses precisely what customers want.

The security features are not just for the top-paying plans either, and they are included in every plan.

godaddy security

GoDaddy’s offers great top security on all their packages

This is, of course, 24/7 security monitoring and DDoS protection. The great thing about DDoS protection is that it works by using algorithms and advanced software to monitor incoming traffic to your website.

Any traffic that isn’t legitimate or could be listed as a concern is denied access, whereas legitimate traffic continues to filter through to the site.

Free SSL Certificates On Top Tier Plans Only

How important is Security to you?

It’s hard to believe anyone would want to harm your website, but they do. Thankfully, GoDaddy’s security team is on the job 24/7 to meticulously monitor suspicious activity and deflect DDoS attacks!

Final Thoughts

Do We Recommend GoDaddy?

Well, Yes we do!

We’ve been a customer of GoDaddy for years (albeit using their dedicated servers). Still, our overall experience with their shared plans has been great too.

If you want to host a small to medium size site, then you should have no problems. Suppose you are looking to host a more significant site. In that case, you may want to think about upgrading to their VPS or dedicated servers.

It’s almost impossible not to notice when you start a search on GoDaddy the reviews, complaints, and forums dedicated to angered customers with mixed reviews and experiences.

However, through this review, while looking at the facts and our own data from our test site (shared server), it has performed well. For the abundance of negative and mixed reviews, is this simply down to the fact that their customer numbers are so large?

After all, it is nearly impossible for any business with over 20 million customers worldwide to please them all.

Ready to give GoDaddy a try?

Give your website the home it deserves. With industry-leading load times, guaranteed 99.9% uptime and expert, 24/7 support, your site couldn’t ask for more!
