Jimdo Overview

What is Jimdo?

Jimdo is a German company with headquarters in Hamburg and offices in Munich and Tokyo. It was founded in 2007 by Matthias Henze, Christian Springub and Fridtjof Detzner.

While still in school, Springub and Detzner started designing websites for small, local businesses. Henze joined them in 2004 and together, they decided to build their own content management system, which was the basis for Jimdo.

In 2009 the company offered a 10% discount to switch to Jimdo from the defunct Yahoo! GeoCities and Google Page Creator, and by 2019 they had created over 25 million websites.

They are still a private company with around 200 employees and pride themselves in creating a family atmosphere within the company. In 2019 they generated a revenue of approximately $51.72 million.

Jimdo was originally a drag-and-drop website builder, but in 2017 they added an AI builder option, called Dolphin, to streamline the process to make it easier for users with limited computer skills.

The Dolphin builder gathers information through a series of questions and even sources images and details from your Google and Facebook accounts to create the first draft of your site. However, they have also kept their original Creator editor for those looking for a bit more creative control.

Jimdo is as an all-in-one website builder and host. Their website claims to ‘unburden your business’ and boasts that you will be able to create a website or online store effortlessly.

They market themselves as being tailor-made for the self-employed, and with over 14 years of experience in building websites, they should know what they’re talking about.

More than 40 million people visit their site each month. So if you’re not one of them, let’s find out if you should be.

Are you looking to create your website with a Website Builder?

Design your website precisely the way you want it with flexible layouts optimised for mobiles. Jimdo has everything you need as a small business.

Ease of Use

How Easy is Jimdo to Use?

The first thing you’ll have to do is register. You can sign in with Google, Facebook or Apple or you can create an account with your email. You’ll then be given two options: creating a site with no coding required (Dolphin) or an editor for coding experts (Creator).

Jimbo Dolphin Editor

Jimdo Dolphin Editor If you choose the option with no coding required, you’ll then be asked a series of questions: Are you an individual or a team? What is your website for (options range from personal to business use)?

Other questions include your business name (Jimdo will even link your social media pages for you, assuming they are under the same name).

You’ll then have to choose three goals for your website (selling, customer contact, promotion, etc.), a topic, style, colour scheme, and what pages your site needs. Then, hey presto! Your site is done.

They’ve even populated it with relevant text and pictures. All you need do is add some personal touches and you’re good to go. You can, of course, make whatever changes to the text and images you want and adjust the layout easily. Best of all, you can do everything on your mobile phone.

Should you decide to code yourself, they’ll ask you what you would like to create and provide a drop-down box you can scroll through to choose the category that best describes what you’re hoping to achieve.

Jimdo then asks you to choose a template. There isn’t much choice, but you will get to personalise this later, and they do offer a blank template so you can start from scratch.

You can then choose a plan and download the Jimdo app if you’re working from your mobile phone. After that, you’ll be able to start editing your site with the drag-and-drop editor.

Honestly, unless you plan to use a blank template and start from scratch, I think the AI website builder is the way to go.

Of course, if you think you’d like a bit more personalisation, then you could use the drag-and-drop editor without actually having much coding knowledge, but why bother when you can get it built for you?

Tools and Features

What Are The Features Of Jimdo?

Jimdo’s main features are its two options of the builder. They have spent a reasonable amount of time developing both.

The AI builder is very intuitive and quick, and the traditional drag-and-drop editor is pretty simple to use. However, the traditional builder is limited when it comes to options and you’ll have to spend a lot of time changing the text and pictures in the sample templates.

They do provide a free editor app so that you can use their Creator editor, as well as the Dolphin AI builder, easily on your mobile phone.

Jimdo’s Dolphin builder will even add relevant text and images to your site using your Facebook and Google accounts.

They also have an image library at your disposal that is stocked with high-quality professional images. Jimdo has a lot of features for small businesses. Not only can you get a good-looking site up and running quickly, but you can also take advantage of their logo maker.

Of course, as with most logo makers, there is the chance that you may end up with a logo that is similar to a competitor.

They also offer an add-on payment plan called Business Listings, an extra £4 a month. You can use this for cross-media marketing, keeping your information up to date, updating all of your online platforms at once and generally boosting your online visibility.

If you’re worried about legality, Jimdo offers a price plan that includes legal compliance features which help you keep your terms and conditions up to date with General Data Protection Regulations.

jimdo features

While Jimdo does offer Search Engine Optimisation, it could be considered a bit basic compared to some other website builders on the market. However, the plus side is that it is automatic, and it will give you tips on how to improve your Google ranking and how to use keywords to attract traffic to your site.

Jimdo has excellent blogging features, including analytics that track readers, an RSS feed and the ability to split posts into categories. In addition, you can add social media buttons and comments to allow visitors to leave their opinions and share your content.

Plans and Pricing

How Much Does Jimdo Cost?

Jimdo offers four website pricing plans plus three online store plans, so there’s a lot to go through.

They also offer a free plan with everything you need to create a website, but your domain name will end with jimdofree.com and your site includes a Jimdo advertising banner at the bottom.

jimdo pricing

The first of the paid options is Start, which is marketed for personal use. It’s £9 a month if you pay annually and £8 per month for two years up front. That’s £108 for one year or £192 for two. It is ad-free and has unlimited bandwidth, access to statistics and your own domain free for the first year (the renewal price being £127.92 for one year and £231.84 for two).

Next is Grow, for business use. This is their best seller and adds SEO, visitor stats and personalised support within 4 hours to their basic features. This is priced at £15 per month for one year and £13 a month for two. That’s £180 billed annually with a renewal cost of £199.92, or £312 for two years with a renewal of £351.84.

Grow Legal adds, customised legal text, GDPR compliance and updates about legal changes to its list of features. This costs £20 per month annually, a £240 initial payment and renewal of £259.92. The two-year plan is £18 per month, so an initial payment of £432 and a renewal cost of £471.84.

The most expensive is Unlimited for £39 monthly for the year (£468 initially and £487.92 upon renewal) or £35 a month for two years (£840 initial payment and £879.84 upon renewal). You get everything offered with the other packages plus unlimited space, professional design analysis and premium support within one hour.

Their Basic online store packages include all the basic shop features plus export orders. Its price and renewal are precisely the same as the Grow package.

The bestselling online store plan is Business, and it is £19 per month for one year or £17 for two. As well as the basics, you get the added features of product variants, social marketing and social selling. So your first year would cost £228 with a renewal of £247.92, and the two-year plan would be £408 with a renewal of £447.84.

VIP gives you the upgrades of unlimited storage, business listings and professional design analysis for the same price as the Unlimited website plan.

Help & Support

How Good is Jimdo’s Support?

Jimdo offers two different help sites, one for Creator and one for Dolphin. They both cover the basics and FAQs for the two different editing packages and are packed with articles for general issues, so it’s unlikely that you’ll need technical help.

This is just as well since Jimdo doesn’t offer live chat or telephone support. The only available support is via email.

This is not ideal if you run into an issue that needs immediate attention, as (depending on your plan) you may be waiting for up to two days for a reply.

jimdo help center

To get in touch with the support team, you must be subscribed to a paid plan. Then, you click on ‘questions’ in your website editor option list and fill out a contact request form detailing your issue.

If you buy their business plan, you can get a reply within 4 hours. With the premium plan, it’s within 1 hour. In addition, there is a contact request form for non-customer, which you can also use if you get locked out of your site.

On the plus side, despite the wait time, replies are very comprehensive are rarely need any follow-up questions. Their customer service team is understanding, helpful and friendly.

They have some great reviews and do genuinely care about your issue. The quality of the support more than makes up for the lack of instant contact.

Final Thoughts

Do We Recommend Jimdo?

Jimdo is an excellent choice for beginners. The free site is perfect if you want a private site to share wedding pictures or information about private events.

If you’re a small business or sole trader who wants to expand their online presence, then you should give them a go, even if it’s just to try them out for free before you decide.

If there is one thing that Jimdo has got, it’s options. From how to create your site to what you pay, it covers a broad spectrum. With plans ranging from free to £840 per year, they’re simultaneously one of the cheapest and most expensive on the market.

Although they offer an editor that claims to be only for those who know how to code, it is still a template-based drag-and-drop editor that some users have found to be quite restrictive. That being said, it is easy to use and does still give you a lot of range.

Jimdo is straightforward to use and offers some good cheaper alternatives as well as comprehensive pricier plans. It is perfect for personal use, blogs and small businesses. The AI builder option is quick, with valuable and relevant content already populating the site with the first draft.

If you’re looking to sell online, Jimdo offers store packages, but they’re probably best for just selling a few products to a few customers. On the other hand, if you’re looking for big sales with a high inventory turnover, then you may find Jimdo a bit limiting.
